Rationalism and austerity are the rule. The architecture is monumental, yes, but objective, emphasising protection from heat and light. Affirmative: but restrained and earthy.

The water that irrigates the garden enters through an aqueduct constructed in the 17 th century with the sole purpose of supplying the Palácio Ficalho. Water and power meet in this Alentejo garden, known in the family as quintalão (in English, “big yard”).
